NEiTA (National Excellence in Teaching Awards) and the Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) are proud to announce the 550 finalists for the NEiTA 2010 ASG Inspirational Teaching Awards.
Amid the global celebration of International Literacy Day, UNESCO describes education and literacy as tools for social and human progress. With complementing values, the current theme for NEiTA is Great Teachers Lead the Way, under which Australian communities have come together to acknowledge and celebrate their great teachers. This has culminated in 1147 teacher nominations.
NEiTA’s Chairman, Mr Terry O’Connell, said great teachers play a leading role in shaping the future and ensuring the best possible learning outcomes for students and their communities.
“They help give students the knowledge, attitudes, and values that help them understand the world and become future agents of change,” Mr O’Connell said.
In a recent Grattan Institute report based on OECD data, it was revealed that a critical element in greater professional efficacy in teachers is public recognition and feedback from their principals and colleagues. In acknowledging the need for recognition of teachers, NEiTA was established in 1994 with the prime purpose of recognising and celebrating the achievements of inspirational and excellent teachers.
“One of the goals of the NEiTA program is to encourage community understanding that teachers have an important and direct impact on our entire education system,” said Mr O’Connell.
“NEiTA has long acknowledged the need for recognition of inspirational teachers. Just like most other people, they not only deserve, but also appreciate, recognition for their work.
“It is with great pleasure that I congratulate the finalists for the NEiTA 2010 ASG Inspirational Teaching Awards, as well as the families, school and early childhood communities who nominated their inspirational teachers,” said Mr O’Connell.

Now in its 17th year, the NEiTA program continues to offer communities an opportunity to celebrate the work of great teachers who inspire their students and their communities. ASG has supported the NEiTA ASG Inspirational Teaching Awards since 1994, and together ASG and NEiTA have helped pioneer the recognition of the important contribution teachers make to our community.
